01
Joe:The same themes, rituals, ideas and confusions, those aspects of our souls which humanity across all societal and cultural barriers share, those same searches for meaning and understanding are at the heart of Shakespeare’s greatest plays and poems. The questions, ideas and dreams he addresses—those which seek to give an understanding of, and bring meaning to, life –those searches which Shakespeare engages in through his work are as valid and relevant today as they were in his lifetime.
Joe:For Shakespeare lovers who already have a passion for the works of the great writer, I think this play offers an intimate and powerful look into the kind of direct and personally revelatory impact Shakespeare’s play and the study of Shakespeare can have on people’s contemporary lives. For those who are unfamiliar with Shakespeare’s work, and may only know of him by name, this play, through its mixture of comedy & drama, (laughter & tears) offers a thoroughly engaging and very relatable introduction to the thrilling work of our greatest Western writer.

“Joe”:In one way the script to many years to write, but in terms of actual time spent writing it took me about a week. I say this because the story is based, though often quite loosely so, on my actual early-life experiences with Shakespeare which I knew I would eventually share with an audience. So for decades the story bubbled in my mind, sometimes in the foreground, always in the background of my mind especially when I was working on one of Shakespeare’s plays which has been a large portion of my work in the theatre. So, I spent years seriously thinking about the piece. But when I finally decided how I wanted to tell the story, the actual writing of came very quickly.
“Joe”:I would simply say to Shakespeare if I could met him: “Thank you, sir! No single other person in my life has had as profound, revelatory and ongoing impact on my life and my understanding of humanity, than you have had. And, all that I owe you, Mr. Shakespeare, is like a star, endless and shinning.”
“Joe”:Yes, in many ways because the story is based on my earliest encounters with Shakespeare.
“Joe”:Shakespeare took me by surprise. I was too young to be curious, but simultaneous too deeply affected by his work, and my relationship with those who loved him already to escape his poetic clutches. I did not seek him out, I did not know who he was -- but rather I caught the good infection of the grand disease of Shakespeare at a very young age. Happily, I have never recovered.

“Joe”:I have thought about telling this story in other fashions, I think it could work as a stage play with multiple actors or even as a film, but perhaps the intimacy, and child-like theatricality of it would be lessened, even lost, if it were performed in other ways.
“Joe”:Monologues, one person shows, both comedic and dramatic have been a highly regarded theatrical form for many years and I think that will continue for many years to come and continue to expand. I have written several such shows, and am writing another now, but for an actress rather than an actor. I had much success in America with a one-person show called AN ILIAD, based on Homer’s poem, The Iliad. I did not write that piece, but performed it several hundred times. In it, I fought the Trojan War on stage alone. So, if one as a writer can envision things cleverly enough, almost anything can be tuned into a one-person show. And what such theatre pieces may lack in terms of scale and spectacle, they often more than make up for in terms of intimacy and direct connection and communication with audiences.
“Joe”:I love performing at the Wanping theatre because it combines the comfort of a large theatre with the acoustic intimacy of a small venue. It offers a great communal shared experience for it audiences and an ideal setting for a show like REVEL’S WORLD OF SHAKESPEARE to be enjoyed by theatre lovers.
“Joe”:Shakespeare’s works continue to reveal themselves to me the more I work on them. Part of that continuing revelation happens because of life experience as well a theatre experience. I performed in a Shakespeare play the first time when I was 8 or 9 in school. I performed first professionally in a Shakespeare play in my late teens. I have worked on all of Shakespeare’s many of them multiple times, as either a director or an actor, or on occasions as both at the same time. Of course, I have performed dozens and dozens of other kinds of plays as well: comedies, dramas, classical, contemporary, experimental, environmental, immersive, musicals and operas. All of these plays have been enriched by my work on Shakespeare’s plays and conversely, my understanding of Shakespeare’s work has been deepened by my work on these other kinds of plays. Then just living life, the pathways and surprises, good and bad, which life brings, continue to inflect and inform my understanding of, and work on, Shakespeare’s plays. The best of his plays prove an endless trove of theatrical treasure to be uncovered and shared, if one stays the long journey with them and remains always open and willing to explore.
